Ostomy Care Hints
- Peristomal Skin (skin surrounding the stoma) should look the same as skin anywhere else. Redness is a sign of skin irritation. Check appropriate ostomy pouching system sizing.
- Secure a tight fit to prevent leaking use conforming ring seals or skin barrier arcs to provide a smooth platform. Your pouch or flange will nest on these waterproof seals.
- Candidiasis (yeast infection) caused by leakage, perspiration, or antibiotic therapy causes itchy, bumpy red skin. Treat with protective skin barrier wipe and protective powder. Use antifungal powder.
- Allergic Contact Dermatitis (redness) Itching and broken skin caused by exposure to materials that irritate the skin on contact (e.g. tape, skin barriers, soap, adhesive, powders, paste or pouch material).
